Fleurs de Villes: A celebration of #pride at the SF Mint
The fantastical art show delights the senses featuring queer icons in San Francisco history—in floral form.
I had the pleasure of attending Fleurs de Villes at the San Francisco Mint this weekend, and it did not disappoint. The historic building houses rooms of floral arrangements celebrating LGBTQIA+ trailblazers and icons of San Francisco history. Upon entering, you’re hit with floral aromas of all kinds, and as you walk through you’re greeted by floral mannequin interpretations styled by artists across the Bay Area. From Harvey Milk to Heklina, it’s a walk through the history of San Francisco’s robust queer history. This exhibit runs through July 2nd, so snag your tickets before it’s over!
It’s hard to choose a favorite, but here are a few of mine:
Peaches Christ
Nigella Botanical Boutique designed the lewk for Peaches Christ, and boy is it an experience. The more you inspect this intricate costume, the more individual elements pop out at you. Peaches Christ is known for her performances and events that blend horror, comedy, and camp—which is demonstrated in this sculpture of her holding a skull (presumably from one of her victims) and a mile-high, Marie Antoinette style hairdo. How does she do it?
San Francisco botanically obsessed Nigella Botanical Boutique livens spaces and spirits with plant and floral art. They style events large and small, as well as create individual arrangements. Their shop is located in the SOMA neighborhood in San Francisco. Take a peek at their Instagram to learn more.
Heklina
Garden Party SF, interpreted iconic drag queen Heklina, who sadly passed away earlier this year at the age of 55. She’s adorned with Anthurium (also known as the flamingo flower), a black asymmetrical black iridescent dress, and a spiky platinum doo. I think we can all agree this slays—and Heklina would enthusiastically approve.
According to their website, Garden Party SF dreams up floral experiences for all of your events, from corporate parties to weddings. Check out their Instagram to see their gorgeous work.
Margaret Cho
Floral Luxe Co recreated comedian/activist Margaret Cho’s costume from her 2005 performance on Dancing with the Stars—complete with the layered rainbow asymmetrical dress and over-the-top headdress. Margaret Cho has integrated queer perspectives in her comedy acts since the ‘90s, and has continued to use her platform to advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights and healthcare throughout her career.
Located in Santa Rosa, Calif., Floral Luxe Co specializes in creating floral experiences for weddings and other events. Their Instagram houses some of their amazing work.
Dalyte Kodzis
An honorable mention goes to Bay Area based performer Dalyte Kodzis, who showed up in all her stilted-rainbow-butterfly glory. What a treat! Check out her website to learn more about her immersive performances.
